Free software and the “support chain”

I think the critical issue in making free operating systems and software truly workable on the desktop is finding the right locus for the “geek” part of the technical support chain. Let me describe a continuum. On one end Apple Computer – then Microsoft – then Linux and “free” operating systems.
WordPress and MovableType

For some time now I’ve been using Movable Type, by Six Apart, as my blogging software. Made it possible for me to move everything to my server and gain greater control over the code as well as the content of my blog. Recently, Robert Scoble introduced a bunch of my NextNow buddies to WordPress, which is free blog software.

Blog feed aggregation on HTML pages

For the past few days I have been immersed once again in the arcane world of blog feeds. Getting my server to read some RSS and Atom feeds and digest the information and then post it on “regular” web pages so you can get a “taste” of a bunch of blogs and then go see the ones you’re interested in.
I hope you’ll enjoy this mix of topics stemming from my ongoing experiences in the world of online communication. Oh, and sometimes the inspiration comes from face-to-face communications too. Many were sparked by my work as Chief Technology Officer of
