3G is no problem - plenty fast enough for ssh. For VNC, on the other hand, the iPad -screen- is more the limiting factor because it's likely to be a bit small - however if you set up VNC on the server side to present a small screen size, it ought to work fine. The one -indispensible- ingredient is the bluetooth keyboard for the iPad, because without it the onscreen iPad keyboard just eats up too much space!

Hi, I am seriously considering getting an iPad 2 mostly for sys admin purpose (to be alerted if a server is down, to have SSH access, VNC / remote desktop, check on the health status of my servers, etc.). I was wondering how realistic some of the tools are (which you mention above) when accessing over 3G (either AT&T or Verizon), hence when not in a WiFi zone? For example, SSH over 3G into servers, does it work on on the iPad 2? I'm not expecting Sir Speedy but I also don't know if I can live with something that too dogged. My other option is to get a small 11" MacBook Air and plug in a USB modem with LTE / 3G (Verizon) into it when needed for remote access but that feels like overkill even if the 11" Air is really nice and light (its extra steps to take whereas the iPad 2 with 3G has it all built in). Thank you, -Eddie
